Non-communicable diseases: the elephant in the room?

an Oxford Global Health Group conference

Monday 31st Jan 2011, 7pm - 8.30pm, Medical Sciences Teaching Centre, Oxford

Join us for the annual Oxford Global Health Group conference, which this year focuses on the growing global burden of non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

80% of deaths in low- and middle-income countries result from chronic disease, particularly affecting young and middle-aged individuals. The risk factors for chronic disease, such as hypertension, obesity and inactivity, are also rising fast worldwide, especially in developing countries undergoing a process of urbanisation and globalisation.

However, there is concern that this major public health issue has been neglected in favour of a focus on infectious causes of ill-health, and suffered a lack of funding and attention. This multi-speaker panel event aims to highlight the burden of non-communicable disease worldwide and to discuss approaches at a local, national and international level which might tackle the problem.

The conference is jointly organised by Oxford Global Health Group and the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research.

Schedule
7pm: Introduction and welcome - Mark Lodge, INCTR
7.10pm: Dr Sanjay Kinra, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
7.35pm: Professor David Kerr, University of Oxford and INDOX/AFROX
8pm: Vanessa Baugh, Commonwealth Secretariat
8.25 pm: Modi Mwatsama, National Heart Forum
8.50pm: Conclusions and closing remarks - Mark Lodge, INCTR
