Organisations

  • Royal Society of Medicine: Global Heath
    The RSM Global Health website is a resource for individuals who wish to learn and engage in any aspect of the global health agenda. It provides a focus for RSM members to share their experiences and aspirations in this important area of healthcare whilst also facilitating institutional and individual access to new initiatives.
  • MedicineAfrica is an exciting new website, created to facilitate long distance medical education, support and mentoring programmes. It has been launched in Somaliland where it is used to give regular teaching to undergraduates and junior doctors.
  • The World Health Organisation (WHO) should be your first port of call to find out about all issues in Global Health. Their Health Topics pages are particularly good, and they also do regular feature articles on current outbreaks and crises.
  • The Jenner Institute is a research department of the University of Oxford. It specialises in vaccine development against some of the world's biggest killers, including HIV, malaria and TB. Their website contains information about the various research projects, including information about how you could be involved with the clinical trials.
  • The Campaign for Greener Healthcare is a dynamic, independent team working on the interface between health and sustainability to bring health messages into the centre of the climate change agenda and to transform healthcare for a sustainable future.
  • The International Health Links Centre (IHLC) aims to enhance access to health care in the developing world by promoting international partnerships that will increase the number and skills of the health workforce.

    Online Learning Resources

  • Free Lecture Notes in Tropical Medicine, courtesy of the Institute for Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. This website contains an enormous amount of information on all the important and most of the rarer tropical diseases. Succinct and well-organised, with lots of illustrations.
  • Free Online Microbiology Lectures, courtesy of the University of South Carolina. This has lectures in video format (you can also download the mp3 files), covering lots of topics in Immunology, Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology and Mycology.
  • Gapminder, Professor Hans Rosling's site, where you can compare health and economic parameters of every country in the world in an engaging colourful visual format.
  • Journals

  • PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, a peer-reviewed, open-access journal. Click on the picture above to link directly.
  • The Lancet Student is a vibrant online global health journal for students. Find out how YOU can contribute by clicking on the picture above to visit their website.
  • Podcasts

  • The WHO have a series of podcasts (available here ), covering various current topics in Global Health.
  • UCL have an Institute for Global Health which hosts regular events in London. The podcasts/videocasts are available via iTunes U, where they've been collected under the banner "Spotlight on Global Health".
  • This Week in Virology, an excellent podcast on all sorts of viruses, from West Nile to Lassa, via HIV. Covers the nitty-gritty science as well as the history, epidemiology and hopes for eradication. Also available via iTunes.
  • This Week in Parasitism, another great podcast from Vincent Racaniello and Dickson Despommier at Columbia University, this time focusing on eukaryotic parasites.

    Books

  • Manson's Tropical Diseases (Edited by Cook & Zumla). The ultimate reference text for all tropical diseases, which is now at its 21st edition. Also includes interesting chapters on the History of Tropical Medicine and "Underlying Factors in Tropical Medicine". If you have £145 to spend, here it is. Alternatively, the Cairn's Library has a couple of copies.
  • Forgotten People, Forgotten Diseases: The Neglected Tropical Diseases and Their Impact on Global Health and Development, by Peter Hotez (ASM publications). You can read a JAMA review here and you can buy it here.
  • The New Plagues: Pandemics and Poverty in a Globalized World, by Stefan Kaufmann (Haus Publishing). Read Nature Medicine's review here.

  • TALC (Teaching Aids at Low Cost) offers free and low-cost healthcare books and accessories. Definitely worth checking out before heading off on your elective!
